Southern Oregon Humane Society has big plans!
... A new place called home!
Southern Oregon Humane Society announces big plans to replace their current shelter facilities with a larger, more efficient facility that sets new standards for animal care. The new shelter is being designed to be a true haven where both people and animals are nurtured, and compassion is instilled throughout the community. “In our effort to keep our animals healthy and happy, our dilapidated old buildings are simply not adequate to provide proper animal care,” said Executive Director, Bill Templeman. “Homeless animals have already been through so much. It is our responsibility to help alleviate their stress and fear. We want to create a healthy and pleasant place for both people and pets,” said Templeman. “This is not just about sheltering animals but setting a new direction for Southern Oregon as it relates to animal welfare. “We plan to build an animal care center that will benefit our community and will be a source of regional pride.”
The proposed facility will have more than twice the space of the current shelter, will offer greatly improved care for our canine and feline residents, and emphasize community prevention services to address the root causes of animal abandonment, overpopulation, and abuse. The facility will incorporate best practices and will include adoption suites in a more “home-like” setting, pet introduction rooms, expanded veterinary services for the animals in residence, and a humane education center. “I am excited to be involved in this project which will mean so much to our region.” said SOHS Board President, Michele O’Connor. “The need for a new animal care facility has been apparent for years and with the community all working together, the dream will become a reality.”
Some of the goals for the new shelter include:
• Designing a warm and welcoming center
• Housing suites that feature “flexible housing” that is easy to clean
• Providing noise reduction for neighbors and the animals
• Incorporating several “green” aspects to have a site that is more environmentally sound
“Great strides have been made in animal sheltering,” said Templeman. “Our current shelter holds us back at every turn. We want the Southern Oregon Humane Society to be a model of best practices in animal care, prevention services, and community education.”
The mission of SOHS is to support the loving, responsible care of all animals in the community by:
• Ensuring proper, nurturing care for the animals at the shelter
• Placing all adoptable animals in loving homes
• Reducing pet overpopulation
• Encouraging responsible pet ownership
• Promoting kindness and compassion for all living beings
The Southern Oregon Humane Society is a completely independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving Southern Oregon, and relies solely on the generosity and donations of businesses and individuals in the community to keep the doors open.
