Pets' n Pals Summer Camp 2010 is a work in progress! Check back with us for updates.

Our Pet Care Club Program is not just for school classrooms! It is a one-hour interactive presentation designed to teach people about responsible pet care. It is a great way to present the subjects of character building, and open discussions about concepts of empathy and compassion. The material is adaptable for all age groups, from 3 to 103!

Annie, our official Humane Education dog, tells her story of being abandoned and going through several adoptions before finding her forever home. She also helps teach people about safety around animals and dog bite prevention.

If you would like Annie and Sky, of Education and Community Outreach, to come to your classroom or group, please call 779-3215 ext 106 or e-mail sky@southernoregonhumane.org to schedule!

The Humane Society has a commitment to educating the community about the humane treatment of animals and other humans. We recognize how important education is in the future of not only our companion animals, but for our world and each other. At its most basic level, Humane Education is about learning to care for the animals in our homes and communities. At a higher level, it strives to establish a sense of responsibility, an understanding of interconnectedness. It is about fostering kindness, respect and empathy for both human and nonhuman animals. Kindness to animals makes a better world for all of us. Humane societies across the country continue to develop humane education programs as the benefits of such programs are recognized. In Oregon, Southern Oregon Humane Society is among the leaders in this movement.

A great deal of this education takes place in schools throughout Jackson County.  Brando, the former Official Southern Oregon Humane Society Dog took the message of responsible pet care to over 1000 students last year with our Pet Care Club. His story helps children of all ages learn about empathy and compassion.

We have a 4-week intensive program, HELP (Humane Education Leadership Program) that we take to at-risk middle school students. The goals of this program are: 1. To help children/young adults learn empathy, respect, responsibility, compassion, anger management, conflict resolution, critical thinking and understanding of the connection between humans and animals and the world. 2. To help students gain skills to be successful in school and life, including self-confidence, good self-esteem, a sense of accomplishment and self-expression. 3. To provide socialization for the shelter dogs to reduce kennel stress. 4. To teach shelter dogs basic skills that make them better candidates for quick and lasting adoptions.

If you are interested in having a presentation done at your school, business or organization, please contact Sky at 779-3215-ext 106 or sky@southernoregonhumane.org.
