Volunteering

Waiting for my walk...
Waiting for my walk...

Welcome to the Southern Oregon Humane Society's volunteer opportunities site. If you are interested in spending some quality time enriching your life and the lives of our special shelter cats or dogs, Click here to download the volunteer application.

Sign-up TODAY!   Volunteer Orientations are done individually. Call Judi at 779-3215 ext 101 to set up your orientation today.

Our goal is to match your unique interests with the special needs of the Society.

Listed below is just a sample of our many Volunteer Opportunities:

KENNEL GUIDES – Help match the customer with the right animal at our shelter.  Kennel Guides learn about the different breeds and different habits of the breeds to better answer customer questions.

NEWSLETTER - Help work on bulk mailings.  A team leader calls in the “ newsletter team “ when bulk items need to be labeled, folded, stapled etc. to get them ready for mailing.

PALS – Students are matched with dogs or cats where they socialize, play, groom, exercise and enjoy the company of the animal. The animal learns to accept unconditional love as easily as they give it. Hours can be used for school credit. Students also receive a job reference from the volunteer coordinator when they are applying for positions.

WEEKEND PALS - Students come in on the weekends only. These students help do the same things as regular PALS with one difference; they only work on weekends and only with dogs that have had their regular PALS on vacation or unable to fulfill the week before commitment do to

SOCIALIZING DOGS or CATS  Adults help to make our animals feel more comfortable while waiting for their new home. Walking, grooming or simply sitting and chatting with them helps each one feel happier and more content.

LAUNDRY/WALKERS – Helping with our daily laundry duties is a weekly commitment. Between loads this volunteer can exercise our dogs or play with our cats.

DOG WALKERS – Combine your exercise with our dogs by walking 3 or 4 dogs with each visit.

DRIVERS – Helping to transport animals to events and LEAP (Love, Empathy, Acceptance, Patience; just one of the Humane Society's education programs)

HANDY HELPERS – Helps with miscellaneous on site needs, from maintenance to landscape

PUPPY TEAMS – This program is family oriented. One or both parents/guardians volunteer with their children. Children as young as 6 years old learn the need for cleanliness and socialization for our puppies as well as community involvement at a young age.

MOMMY AND ME – This program is family oriented.  One or both parents/guardians volunteer with their children. Children as young as 6 years old learn the need for cleanliness and socialization of our cats and kittens.  In this program if the adult would like to also walk our dogs they can as long as the child DOES NOT hold the leash and the dog is small to medium.

CAT CREW – This program is for cat lovers. The interaction is with cats only. Students and their parents can come and help to socialize by letting them enjoy a lap and a cuddle. The crew is also able to help out with bathing and grooming.
